At least 11 journalists were reportedly arrested when police cracked down on a protest for press freedom in the Maldives capital of Malé on April 3. Police used pepper-sprayed on a number of protesters, and injuries were reported. The footage here shows police dragging an unconscious protester away from the crowd, and dropping him on a sidewalk.
The journalists, mostly from Maldivian news organization Haveeru, were rallying against a Civil Court decision to temporarily shut down the company amid an ownership dispute, as well as a proposed bill that would criminalize defamation. The Sun Online reported that those arrested included “heads of some media stations as well as female journalists.”
A March 30 statement on the proposed bill from the International Federation of Journalists demanded its “immediate withdrawal” and called on the government to “remove the articles in the proposed bill that violates the freedom of media and the freedom of expression ensured by the constitution to every citizen.”
Former President Mohamed Nasheed, whose sentencing to 13 years imprisonment under anti-terrorism laws in March 2015 was met with international criticism, tweeted: “Democracy in the Maldives is in peril. The Government must guarantee press freedom & must release the journalists now.”
