After a couple of great weeks in Sri Lanka, our next stop was the Maldives. Before we left home, whenever we would tell someone that we were going to the Maldives on our trip, they would immediately ask “but isn’t that too expensive?”. Perhaps, yes, but the Maldives can also be done on a budget.

We flew into Male in Business Class (not very backpacker like), which cost £144 each, but in fairness the Economy price at time of booking was only £10pp less. Due to the late arrival time of our flight, we needed to spend a night in Male before we could continue our journey by boat the next day to Maafushi. After reading a few bits online, we actually opted to stay in Hulhumale (which is a short 10 min drive from the airport), as the accommodations were nicer but also slightly cheaper. The bus from the airport to Hulhumale cost 20MVR each. Once we got off the bus at the first stop, it was a short 10 minute walk to Pine Lodge which was really nice for a stop over, with friendly staff and great wifi.

The next day, we caught a taxi (240MVR) from our hotel to the Maafushi ferry jetty to catch the 3pm crossing. There isn’t any terminal or building for the ferry, you literally just step onto the boat and take a seat. The ferry is provided mainly as a form of transport to get resources to the island, but they do also take passengers. It takes around 1.5hrs to make the journey, which was a bit choppy, but only cost 30MVR each. This was considerably cheaper than the speedboat options, which takes about half the time but costs roughly 25USDpp.

Maafushi really surprised us. It wasn’t the “Maldives” we were expecting, with the endless clear empty beaches etc, but it certainly held its own charm. The island was considerably more developed than we had realised, with lots of new high rise hotel’s being built at the northern end of the island. There is loads of Chinese investment happening all over the Maldives currently, with the hotels going up certainly being linked. It wouldn’t be a surprise if islands like Maafushi end up being similar for the Chinese to what the Canary Islands are like for Europeans.

We arranged a great half day snorkeling trip through our hotel, which included swimming with turtles, dolphin watching and lunch on a sand bank. We couldn’t recommend this trip anymore, it made our time in the Maldives. The hotel were offering a half price offer on this trip, with it being 25USD pp, which included the boat (obviously) all snorkeling equipment, lunch and water. By the sounds of it, we were incredibly lucky to have got to see both turtles and dolphins as with any underwater activity it isn’t 100% guaranteed that you will see anything.

After Maafushi, we took another public ferry from Maafushi to Guriadhoo. Information about this boat on the internet is rather hard to find, but for note the boat runs daily (except Friday) and it leaves Maafushi port at 4:30pm. It is a large blue boat (similar size to the Maafushi ferry). The price of this journey was 22MVRpp. When we arrived in Guraidhoo, we were greeted at the ferry jetty by our hotel in a golf buggy! A couple of minutes later, we were all checked in and in our room.

Now, don’t get us wrong, it probably is a lovely place. But we didn’t really enjoy Guraidhoo at all. Our hotel was located next door to one of the two Mosques on the island, and the call to prayer 5 times a day echoed through the halls of our hotel each time. There also wasn’t a whole lot to do there. We also got a little fed up with the hotel, as they kept trying to sell us a snorkelling or fishing trip every time we walked by reception which got very annoying.

All in all, we had a good week on the whole in the Maldives. It would have been good to spend some time actually in Male itself perhaps, but Maafushi was nice and we would swerve Guraidhoo if we were to visit again. There are certainly some other islands to consider visiting too. The week after we visited, we had some friends head to Rasdhoo and what they have said about the place sounds great. Another place worth looking at is Thoddoo, which we wish we really made it too. The journey there seems a little more tricky, but everything we have heard and read gives it glowing reviews.

During our week in the Maldives, we spent a total of £801.49 between two people, which includes our flight (in Business remember) 6 nights accommodation, all our transport around the islands, our snorkelling trip and all our food whilst there.
